par Karl DonvilAalst counters bad luck and keeps up the good spirit!
The club “Nievel Kapel”, named after a very old Chapel of St.Roch (the French Saint mostly portrayed with a dog who licked his wounds and helped him heal), had its32 th edition of her yearly show again in the Oktoberhalls of Wieze. Although 982 entries is not bad at all for a CAC show, compared to last year it is a drop down of 349 dogs! Last year was exceptionally good and that is why it is so hard to explain what the reason could be. And it is not so that last year something happened that could have cast a shadow on the show for this year. And there is a lot of parking space available too, an important issue for most exhibitors! Maybe there was just not enough publicity (CAC shows are not published on the FCI calendar)?
The committee had invited 21 judges, 9 of them were Belgian judges. The other judges were coming from France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Croatia and the United Kingdom. With so many judges invited, it shows that the committee was prepared to much more dogs. I am a little more concerned about the fact that 8 foreign judges were invited to judge one day only which makes them expensive, unless they attract many dog, but that wasn’t the case, on the contrary, in general the scores were rather low and a lot of judges could work in a relaxed tempo. Inviting foreign judges can be an expensive adventure for a club, especially for smaller clubs. It takes a big part of the budget and it needs to be well considered. No problem if it are only a few, but if there are just too much it is of utmost importance that they attract enough dogs to cover the costs for their trip and stay over. To keep this risk under control, it is of course a good option to chose judges who can judges several breeds in different groups and that are coming from neighboring countries to make the expenses relatively bearable as was the case here.
On Saturday Mr.D.Ludovic from France had 62 entries, the maximum score that day. He judged only that day. Half of his entries were Newfoundlanders. Mrs. Dolejsova O. from Croatia had also 62 entries, except for the 11 Labradors she had only Terrier breed that she shared with Ms.Weijenborg-Weggemans from the Netherlands who had 53 entries. On Sunday it was more busy and there was more public interest too. Mr.P.Roosenboom had 87 dogs to judge. The 24 French Bulldogs, 15 Pugs and 14 Shibas were responsible for this high score. With 38 dogs on Saturday, Mr.Roosenboom was the best investment for the club, also taken into account that he was a Belgian judge and therefore a lot cheaper than his first competitor, Mrs. Dolejsova from Croatia who had another good score on Sunday when she had 59 dogs to judge and Mr G.Christiansen from Denmark who came on the 3rd place with 16 dogs on Saturday and 84 on Sunday. His 39 Chihuahuas where the most popular breed of the show. Mrs. Morss from the UK judged on Saturday only and was invited for the 27 Golden Retrievers only. Mr.B.Roberts was also invited to judge only on Saturday and just for one breed, the English Bulldogs. 24 Specimen turned up. Also worth mentioning are the 22 Bernese Mountain dogs for Mr.Myriam Vermeire and the presence of a Chart Polski and the Japanese Breed, a Kishu, one of the rarest breeds in the whole world.
Sponsor this year would be Royal Canin. And although the red carpet was spread out in the main ring the truck with the stand did not show up, leaving the spot for the booth empty and the main ring without a podium.
Every year it is a surprise who will win the title of Hopkeizer and Hopkeizerin, going to the best dog and to the best bitch. This year there was no direct conflict in the results compared to previous years where some dogs ended Best Bitch while being beaten by other dogs in her group. Mrs. Dolejsova from Croatia was granted the honor to pick out the final winners. The title of Hop Empress went to the Golden Retriever Pinkerly Winnipeg, an Italian Dog owned by Braeckman-Bracke. She won the breed under UK judge Mrs.Heather Morss and won the group later on under Mrs.Delvaux.The Lhasa Apso El Minja's Jawaharlal Nehru became second and was shown by her breeders and owners: Mrs and Mr.Van Tatenhove from The Netherlands. This bitch won the breed under Mrs.Degryze from Belgium and ended second in the group under Mrs. Reinelt-Gebauer from Germany. As she was the best Bitch, however, she could compete for Best Bitch even when she was already beaten by a dog. Illogical but this is still an acceptable situation compared to previous years. The title of Hop Emperor was reserved for the Rhodesian Ridgeback Tusani Cool Bakari that was entered by P.H.Jensen from Denmark. He won the breed and the group under Mr.Burkhard from Germany. On the second place came the American Cocker Zik's Way to Look from Mrs. Decrolier Maryline from Belgium. Zik was the choice of Mrs.Delvaux from Belgium who judged also the breed and the group. And since the FCI decided that there should always be a Best In Show, and only one, both, the best Dog and the best Bitch, were in competition again. The Golden Retriever, who was crowned Hop Empress, was finally chosen Best In Show.
Sponsor this year would be Royal Canin. And although the red carpet was spread out in the main ring the truck with the stand did not show up, leaving the spot for the booth empty and the main ring without a podium. Notwithstanding all the bad luck , the members of the club kept up the good mood and traditional hospitality. Next year it will be again a CAC version and planned on 21 & 22 of may. I hope they will have again as many dogs and even more as last year so that we can consider this edition as a intermezzo and focus on a successful future for the club and the show.
